US Department of Justice charges seven in international sextortion ring targeting minors

The US Department of Justice announced on 30 August 2026 federal charges against seven individuals in the United States, Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire for operating an international sextortion network that targeted more than 200 minors, primarily teenage boys, over two years. The defendants used Instagram and Snapchat to pose as young women, solicited explicit images, then threatened to distribute the material unless victims paid money or provided additional images. At least three victims died by suicide during the investigation.
