Police nab 9, recover $15,900 in cryptocurrency, others

Guardii Analysis

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre arrested nine suspects in three separate operations targeting alleged online investment fraud, romance scams, identity theft, sextortion and money laundering. Four suspects were arrested in Agbor and Okpanam, Delta State, over alleged online fraud targeting victims in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and other countries, with investigations indicating that the suspects allegedly used fake social media identities, fraudulent investment websites and cryptocurrency transactions to defraud victims. AIG Ezima disclosed that the operations recovered $15,900 in cryptocurrency among other assets.

Given that a substantial proportion of financially motivated sextortion targeting Western teenagers originates from West African organised-crime networks, as consistently reported by the FBI and other agencies, enforcement action that disrupts the infrastructure and personnel behind these schemes materially reduces the volume of contact attempts reaching children in target markets. The arrest and asset-seizure operation conducted by Nigerian authorities addresses the supply side of the threat, but demand-side protection requires technology deployed at the point of contact. Guardii, a Meta Business Partner and world-leading AI online-safety platform, detects the characteristic escalation, coercion and payment-demand patterns of financially motivated sextortion in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms where offenders operate, flagging hostile conversations before a child sends compromising material or transfers funds, and enabling parents and safeguarding professionals to intervene at the moment leverage is first applied rather than after financial or psychological harm has occurred.
