Meta Launches Teen Accounts with Strict Privacy Settings as Child Safety Scrutiny Intensifies

Guardii Analysis

Meta announced the global rollout of Instagram Teen Accounts, placing all users under 16 into private accounts by default with restrictions on who can contact them, what content they see, and when they can use the app. The feature requires parental approval for users under 16 to change privacy settings, limits messaging to people they follow or are already connected to, and applies the most restrictive content settings automatically. The changes affect tens of millions of teen users and represent Meta's most significant structural response to regulatory and legislative pressure in the US, EU and Australia regarding child safety on its platforms.

Targeted pattern detection intercepts the contact itself rather than restricting the entire channel. Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion modules monitor direct-message exchanges in real time across Instagram and other platforms, identifying escalation, coercion and boundary-testing before a conversation reaches the threshold of acute harm, and surfacing the threat to a parent or safeguarding professional without requiring the platform to lock down access for every compliant user. Where account restrictions create a perimeter, live conversation analysis built by a Meta Business Partner addresses the threat that occurs within it.
