ATP Safe Sport prevents 234,000 abusive comments reaching players & fans
Guardii Analysis
The ATP Tour announced on 22 October 2026 that its Safe Sport initiative prevented more than 234,000 abusive comments from reaching tennis players and fans across ATP and player social media channels during the past year. The programme, delivered in partnership with Tennis Data Innovations, Sportradar, Social Protect and Arwen AI since 2024, analysed more than 3.7 million comments and identified over 284,000 abusive messages, removing 82 percent in real time before they reached their targets. More than 85 percent of players who received social media engagement were subjected to abusive comments originating from over 100,000 social media accounts. The initiative now covers all ATP-ranked men's tennis players and includes automated threat alerts and a dedicated mobile application.
The interception model demonstrates one method of limiting abuse at the point of contact, but detection alone leaves athletes vulnerable to coordinated targeting, escalation across platforms, and the psychological burden of knowing that hundreds of thousands of hostile messages are being generated in their name every year. Guardii's athlete-abuse detection module operates earlier in the attack chain, identifying the coercive patterns, sustained targeting and threat escalation that distinguish genuine danger from isolated hostility, flagging coordinated campaigns before they reach critical mass and surfacing the accounts driving harassment networks rather than filtering individual comments after they have been posted. By recognising the shape of a campaign rather than relying solely on keyword filters, the platform enables sporting bodies to intervene at the source, disrupting organiser accounts and protecting athletes from the reputational, psychological and physical-safety risks that flow from organised online abuse.
