FBI and Gainesville Police Warn of Surging Online Child Exploitation as Tips Soar to 800 Weekly

Gainesville Police Chief Nelson Moya and FBI Supervisor Matthew Riser warned that predators increasingly use gaming and messaging apps to conduct sextortion and online exploitation of minors, with the Internet Crimes Against Children taskforce now receiving between 500 and 800 tips weekly, a near eightfold increase from the 100 weekly tips received in 2020. The FBI is tracking 500 active cases involving violent online networks and confronting a new wave of AI-generated child exploitation images, underscoring an operational environment in which offenders shift rapidly across platforms including gaming systems, messaging apps and social media.

Detecting coercion before the first image leaves a child's device is the intervention point, and systems built for real-time pattern recognition are now the frontline control.
