This extends a decade-long practice where police created bots to lure predators, including the Dutch organization Terres Des Hommes' 'Sweetie' project — a virtual 10-year-old from the Philippines that helped identify 1,000 predators before being discontinued in 2021 — and Microsoft volunteers' 2018 AI chatbot built with nonprofit Street Grace that continues to be used by agencies including the NYPD.
Law enforcement sting operations demonstrate the viability of AI-driven pattern detection but operate at investigative scale, not preventive scale.
