UK ICO Imposes £14.47 Million Fine on Reddit for Child Safety Data Protection Failures

The UK Information Commissioner's Office imposed a fine of £14.47 million on Reddit on February 24, 2026, for failures giving rise to risks of harm to children, following a £247,590 penalty against MediaLab in early February for similar violations. The ICO found that MediaLab, owner of Imgur, permitted children under 13 to use the platform with parental supervision under its terms of service but implemented no form of age assurance to identify users' ages and had no mechanisms in place to obtain parental consent for processing. The enforcement actions form part of the ICO's Children's Code strategy, with improvements introduced between April 2024 and July 2026 affecting close to five million child users across several platforms.
Regulators are holding platforms accountable for safeguarding obligations, yet age assurance and parental consent gates do not intercept the harms that occur once a child is on a service.
