Study Finds 40% Rise in AI-Generated Child Abuse Imagery Reports in 2026
Guardii Analysis
Research published by the Internet Watch Foundation on 13 October 2026 documents a 40 per cent year-on-year increase in reports of AI-generated and manipulated child sexual abuse material, with analysts identifying more than 25,000 discrete AI-created images in the first nine months of 2026 compared with 18,000 in the whole of 2025. The report notes that generative models are being used to create photorealistic CSAM from text prompts and to digitally alter legitimate images of children, and that the material is circulating on both open web forums and encrypted messaging platforms where traditional hash-matching detection is ineffective.
Detecting synthetic and manipulated child sexual abuse material requires systems that recognise abusive context and intent rather than matching known image hashes. Guardii's CSAM detection module, designed to identify both photographic and AI-generated material, operates in real time within private-message environments across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms, flagging or blocking hostile material before it reaches a child and surfacing the threat to a parent, school or law-enforcement authority without requiring human moderators to review every image.
