Queensland schools to trial AI content-moderation tools following surge in image-based bullying

Guardii Analysis

Queensland's Department of Education will pilot artificial intelligence content-moderation tools in 30 secondary schools during 2027 to combat a documented rise in image-based cyberbullying, including AI-generated deepfakes used to humiliate classmates. The trial follows a departmental review revealing a 60 percent increase in complaints involving manipulated or sexualised images of students over the past 18 months, with current monitoring systems unable to detect synthetic media or material shared via encrypted messaging apps. Education Minister Grace Grace emphasised the need for technology that operates across platforms rather than within school networks alone, given that most abuse occurs on personal devices outside campus.

Guardii's anti-CSAM and anti-cyberbullying detection modules identify both genuine and AI-generated image-based abuse circulating in direct messages, flagging material that depicts or targets a child before it proliferates. Backed by Startmate and operating as a world-leading AI safety platform, the system analyses conversation patterns to distinguish coercive image sharing, sextortion attempts and coordinated harassment from benign exchanges, reporting the nature and severity of the threat rather than exposing every message to human review. This targeted approach allows parents, schools and authorities to intervene against specific high-risk conduct without the privacy burden of universal content scanning or the latency inherent in post-incident reporting.
