Norway to enforce age limit on social media from 2025

Guardii Analysis

Norway's government has announced plans to enforce a minimum age of 15 for social media use from 2025, raising the existing unenforced limit of 13. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that the measure aims to protect children from harmful content and algorithms, and the government is exploring age-verification technology to ensure compliance. The announcement follows growing concern among parents and educators about the impact of social media on young people's mental health.

Age limits enforced through verification impose an authentication burden on every user and may shift harmful contact to platforms or channels that remain unmonitored. A system that detects predatory behaviour at the point of interaction addresses the harm itself: by identifying grooming, sextortion, and abusive patterns in direct messages, such technology surfaces the subset of children who are at genuine risk while allowing the majority to participate safely. Guardii's AI-driven detection operates across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox, and other platforms to flag coercion, sustained targeting, and escalation in real time, reporting the shape and seriousness of a conversation to parents, schools, or safeguarding professionals and enabling intervention where it is needed, without requiring universal age checks.
