Afeez Olatunji Adewale, 27, a Nigerian national linked to the so-called Yahoo Boys network, was sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in laundering money from a sextortion scheme that led to the death of Jack Sullivan, a 20-year-old from Abington, Pennsylvania. Adewale, arrested in Nigeria in August 2023 and extradited to the United States in February 2026, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering charges; two co-defendants were also convicted, with one receiving a six-year sentence. The FBI reports that sextortion cases targeting primarily teenage boys have skyrocketed, with more than 54,000 cases reported in 2024—a 60 per cent increase from 2023—though authorities believe the true scale is far higher owing to victim shame and embarrassment.
Backstory alone does not prevent the next suicide. Guardii's anti-sextortion module monitors direct-message channels across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and Roblox for the language patterns, image-solicitation tactics, and escalating financial demands characteristic of these transnational schemes—detecting coercion before compliance and blocking hostile contact before it reaches the victim. When a child is targeted, Guardii surfaces the incident to a parent or school authority in real time, preserving evidence chains for law enforcement and enabling immediate protective action. This targeted, intelligence-led intervention closes the operational window that allowed Sullivan's harassment to continue unchecked, addressing the underlying harm without relying solely on retrospective prosecution.
