Meta Settles Child Safety Lawsuit with Over 40 States for Up to $17 Billion

Meta reached a landmark settlement in its child safety trial with more than 40 states plus the District of Columbia and multiple territories, agreeing to payments of up to 17 billion dollars over 10 years, changes to its apps for teens, and stricter age assurances. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who led the trial, called it the highest amount of money ever paid in a case of this kind. Meta stated it will roll out many of the default protections in the next six months, but it will take up to a year to implement age assurances, which the company acknowledged is notoriously difficult.

Platform-level age assurance and default protections represent a structural shift in how Meta governs teen accounts, but the settlement does not specify how the company will detect harm occurring within direct messages, the channel through which grooming, sextortion and peer-to-peer abuse most commonly unfold.
