Meta Platforms sued by New Mexico over child safety failures

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez on 5 September filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms alleging that Facebook and Instagram have enabled child sexual exploitation by recommending accounts offering child sexual abuse material and connecting predators with minors. The complaint, based on a months-long undercover investigation, asserts that researchers posing as underage users were served content depicting minors in sexualised poses and were recommended accounts advertising such material for sale. The suit accuses Meta of violating state laws against unfair trade practices and failing to implement adequate safety controls, seeking injunctive relief and civil penalties. Meta has stated it uses technology to proactively detect and report child exploitation and that the claims mischaracterise its work.
