Meta Faces $1.4 Billion Fine Over Failure to Remove Child Sexual Abuse Material in Spain
Guardii Analysis
Spanish data protection authorities have imposed a 1.4 billion euro fine on Meta Platforms for failing to adequately remove child sexual abuse material from its services. The penalty, one of the largest under European data protection law, follows an investigation into the company's content moderation practices and response times to flagged CSAM content across Facebook and Instagram.
Platform-level content moderation at scale confronts a structural detection problem: retrospective review of flagged material relies on the harm already being visible, shared and reported. Real-time pattern detection intercepts contact as it develops, identifying coercion, secrecy-seeking and other grooming hallmarks before imagery is created or distributed. Guardii's anti-CSAM and anti-grooming modules operate at the conversation layer across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms, surfacing high-risk exchanges to parents or safeguarding teams and enabling immediate escalation to law enforcement when material is detected, addressing the harm at the point of contact rather than after publication.
