NCAA Joins Program to Identify Online Harassment, Potentially Restrict Sports Betting Accounts
Guardii Analysis
The NCAA has joined an initiative that combines social media monitoring and investigative tools to identify individuals who threaten or harass college athletes, coaches and officials online, with participating sportsbooks potentially using the information to restrict or terminate betting accounts. The initiative responds to escalating abuse linked to sports wagering: NCAA research found that 12 percent of verified abuse was directly connected to sports betting, with approximately 80 percent directed at participants in the men's and women's basketball tournaments, and a separate survey indicating that 51 percent of respondents reported receiving social media abuse related to their athletic performance, while 46 percent had received negative or threatening messages from someone who had wagered on their games.
For institutions seeking to intercept abuse before it reaches a young athlete, real-time detection offers a more decisive safeguard than post-incident investigation. Guardii, backed by Startmate and a Meta Business Partner, operates an AI-driven platform that detects harmful patterns in direct-message conversations in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other services, including a dedicated athlete-abuse detection module that identifies sustained targeting, escalation and coercion before a message reaches the target. The platform surfaces a child or athlete in crisis to a parent, institution or professional without handing anyone a feed of what was said, and in this case would flag the abuse before it inflicted harm, enabling rapid escalation to the right authority.
