Meta expands teen safety features with nighttime notification limits

Meta on 11 September 2024 announced it will expand teen safety measures on Instagram by automatically limiting notifications between 10pm and 7am for users under 18 and introducing stricter default privacy settings that prevent adults from sending direct messages to teens who do not follow them. The company stated the changes aim to reduce late-night social pressure and unsolicited contact, building on earlier restrictions that placed teen accounts into private mode by default and limited the reach of sensitive content in Explore and Reels.

Notification suppression and contact gating reduce opportunity but do not inspect the conversations that do occur, leaving schools, parents and platforms blind to grooming escalation, sextortion scripts and peer-on-peer abuse that unfold within permitted exchanges.
