Irish regulator fines TikTok 345 million euros over child data protection failures

Guardii Analysis

Ireland's Data Protection Commission has imposed a fine of 345 million euros on TikTok for violations of the EU General Data Protection Regulation relating to the processing of children's personal data between July and December 2020, including failures in age verification, transparency and the default-public status of child accounts. The decision follows a two-year investigation and includes binding orders to bring processing operations into compliance.

Data-protection enforcement of this kind holds platforms accountable for systemic design choices, but compliance with transparency and account-setting rules does not itself prevent a child from being targeted by an adult with predatory intent once contact is initiated. Real-time monitoring that interprets conversational dynamics—repeated unsolicited messages, escalation to requests for personal information or images, coercion and threat language—allows intervention at the point harm is occurring. Backed by Startmate and operating as a Meta Business Partner, Guardii applies pattern-recognition across direct messages on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Roblox and Discord to detect grooming, sextortion and age-inappropriate contact as conversations develop, surfacing a child at risk to a parent or safeguarding professional and enabling rapid escalation to authorities when threat indicators cross into an emergency threshold.
