Interpol arrests 300 in global operation targeting sextortion networks

Interpol announced on 4 September 2024 that a coordinated operation across 22 countries resulted in 300 arrests and the identification of more than 1,000 suspects linked to online financial sextortion networks, with the six-month operation focusing on West African organised crime groups using social media to target victims globally. The agency reported that officers dismantled multiple call centres and seized devices containing evidence of mass solicitation campaigns, and emphasised that young male victims are particularly vulnerable to schemes in which offenders impersonate women to obtain explicit images and then demand payment under threat of exposure.
