Instagram Launches Teen Account Safety Features, Restricts Adult Contact
Guardii Analysis
Meta announced on October 19, 2024, that it is rolling out mandatory teen account protections on Instagram globally, including automatic restrictions on who can contact users under 18 via direct messages and limitations on content recommendations, with accounts for users under 16 defaulting to private and requiring parental approval to change safety settings. The company stated the features are designed to reduce unsolicited contact from adults and to give parents greater oversight, responding to sustained criticism from regulators and child-safety advocates over grooming and exploitation on the platform.
Contact restrictions reduce opportunity but do not eliminate intent, and offenders adapt by misrepresenting their age or targeting teens on platforms with weaker controls. Cross-platform detection intercepts harm regardless of where a predator makes contact: Guardii operates across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and others, identifying grooming and sextortion patterns in direct messages even when an offender bypasses age gates or migrates between services. A Meta Business Partner, Guardii complements platform-level policy by providing real-time pattern recognition that surfaces coercive or exploitative contact as it escalates, reporting the nature of the threat to a parent or authority without compromising message privacy.
