FBI warns of surge in AI-generated child sexual abuse material

Guardii Analysis

The FBI issued a public warning on 4 September 2026 that artificial intelligence tools are being used to generate photorealistic child sexual abuse material at scale, including deepfake images created from innocuous photographs of real children posted on social media. The Bureau reported a significant increase in reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children involving AI-generated CSAM, with offenders using the material for sextortion, grooming and distribution on encrypted platforms.

Detection of AI-generated abuse material requires systems that identify coercion and distribution patterns rather than relying solely on hash-matching of known images. Guardii's CSAM detection module, built to intercept both photographic and synthetic abuse material in real time, analyses conversation context and image-sharing behaviour across platforms including Instagram, Discord and Snapchat, flagging distributions that exhibit the hallmarks of exploitation. By surfacing hostile contact before it reaches the target and enabling rapid escalation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or law enforcement, the platform addresses the emerging threat the FBI has now documented.
