FBI Reports 4,500 Arrests in Global Operation Targeting AI-Facilitated Child Exploitation

The FBI announced on 20 September 2026 that a coordinated international operation involving law enforcement agencies in 72 countries resulted in more than 4,500 arrests related to online child sexual exploitation, with a significant portion involving the use of AI tools to create, manipulate, or distribute child sexual abuse material. Operation Renewed Hope, conducted between May and August 2026, identified 1,200 offenders who used AI nudification tools or generative models to create synthetic images of identifiable children, and led to the removal of more than 300 children from situations of active abuse. The FBI's Internet Crimes Against Children task forces reported that offenders are increasingly using encrypted messaging platforms and AI generation tools to evade traditional content-scanning safeguards, complicating detection and evidence-gathering.
