Europol warns of AI-generated child sexual abuse material surge

Guardii Analysis

Europol has warned that the volume of AI-generated child sexual abuse material is increasing rapidly, with offenders using generative artificial intelligence tools to create realistic synthetic imagery that is difficult to distinguish from photographs of real children and evades traditional hash-based detection systems that rely on matching known files. The agency reports that AI-generated CSAM is being used in online grooming to desensitise victims, shared in offender networks, and produced in far greater volume than was previously possible, complicating efforts by law enforcement and technology platforms to identify and remove illegal content because each generated image is unique and does not match existing databases.

Detection of AI-generated child abuse material requires classifiers capable of recognising the visual and contextual markers of synthetic CSAM rather than relying solely on hash signatures of previously identified files. Guardii's CSAM-detection module, which operates in real time across direct-messaging platforms including Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, is designed to flag both photographic and AI-generated imagery shared in private conversations, intercepting material before it reaches a child and enabling rapid escalation to the appropriate authority. By operating at the point of exchange rather than after content has been indexed into a central database, the system addresses the velocity and novelty of AI-generated abuse material, a threat profile that legacy retrospective-scanning methods are not structured to meet.
