Europol reports 31 arrests in coordinated operation against online child sexual exploitation

Europol has announced the results of a coordinated law enforcement operation across 18 European countries that led to 31 arrests and the identification of 55 suspects linked to online child sexual exploitation networks. The operation, conducted in late November 2024, targeted individuals who used encrypted messaging platforms and peer-to-peer file-sharing services to distribute child sexual abuse material and coordinate contact offences. Investigators seized computers, mobile devices and storage media, and safeguarded 16 children from ongoing abuse. The operation was supported by cross-border intelligence sharing and analytical tools that matched digital evidence across jurisdictions.

Law enforcement action depends on evidence of harm that has already occurred or is in progress, often reaching investigators only after material has been shared or a victim has reported abuse. Detection systems that intercept grooming and sextortion conversations at the moment of escalation, before images are solicited or coercion succeeds, compress the window in which an offender operates and create an earlier point of intervention for authorities.
