Europol-led operation arrests 76 across nine countries in coordinated sextortion crackdown

Europol announced on September 10, 2026, that a coordinated operation spanning nine European countries and supported by the FBI resulted in the arrest of 76 individuals suspected of running organized online sextortion rings that targeted more than 3,000 victims, predominantly teenagers, over an 18-month period. Operation SafeGuard, conducted between July and September 2026, identified suspects in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Romania and the United Kingdom who used fake profiles on Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok to establish contact, solicit explicit images, then extort payments ranging from €200 to €5,000. Europol's European Cybercrime Centre reported that the networks employed shared scripts, payment-processing infrastructure and victim databases hosted on encrypted messaging channels, and that forensic analysis linked at least four of the syndicates to previous fraud and identity-theft operations.

Multi-stage sextortion follows a predictable behavioral signature that automated detection surfaces before the extortion demand.
