Victoria updates student safety protocols in line with national anti-bullying guidance

The Victorian Department of Education has revised its student safety and wellbeing protocols to incorporate findings from the federal Anti-Bullying Rapid Review and align with the refreshed National Framework. The updated protocols require schools to document cyberbullying incidents in a standardised format, mandate training for staff on digital harm recognition, and establish clearer referral pathways to external support services when online abuse involves sexual content or sustained harassment. The changes take effect from Term 4, 2026, and will be integrated into Victoria's existing participation in the Let's Stop Bullying campaign.

Standardised incident documentation improves data visibility but does not alter the timeline of harm itself, which often unfolds over days or weeks before staff awareness. Guardii's anti-cyberbullying and anti-sextortion filters operate at the conversation layer, identifying coercion, escalation and image-based pressure as messages are exchanged on Snapchat, Instagram, Discord and other platforms. The system surfaces a student experiencing sustained harassment or sexual extortion to a school welfare officer or parent in real time, enabling intervention before the abuse intensifies or migrates to less visible channels. Where updated protocols strengthen the institutional response, pattern-based detection shortens the interval between harm onset and professional support.
