US state attorneys general demand TikTok transparency on child safety measures

Guardii Analysis

Attorneys general from 44 US states and territories have issued demands to TikTok seeking detailed information about the platform's child safety practices, content moderation systems, and measures to prevent minors from encountering harmful or age-inappropriate material. The joint action, coordinated through a multistate investigation, requires TikTok to disclose data on grooming, sextortion, and exposure to sexual content, as well as the effectiveness of age verification and parental control tools, with the inquiry informing potential enforcement action under state consumer protection and child safety laws.

Platform disclosures and policy commitments do not alter the fact that predatory contact is initiated and escalates within direct messages, the layer least visible to content moderation systems that primarily scan public posts and comments. Guardii's anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection operates inside the messaging environment across TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, identifying coercion, age-inappropriate solicitation and threat patterns in real time and surfacing conversations that meet risk thresholds to parents, schools or platform safety teams. For state enforcers evaluating platform duty of care, deploying detection at the point where exploitation occurs provides a measurable mechanism to intercept harm before it progresses, rather than relying on retrospective reporting after abuse has been completed.
