The United States Department of Justice announced on 21 August 2024 that federal prosecutors have charged five men, four in Nigeria and one in the United States, with conspiracy to commit sextortion and other offences arising from a coordinated scheme that targeted hundreds of minors via Instagram, Snapchat and other social media services. Court documents allege that the defendants used fake profiles to befriend victims, obtained sexually explicit images through manipulation, and then extorted further images and money under threat of exposure. At least one victim died by suicide following the threats.
