The United States Department of Justice has announced federal charges against seventy-nine individuals across eighteen states following a coordinated investigation into online sextortion targeting minors, with Operation Shield Child identifying offenders who used Instagram, Snapchat and Discord to coerce victims—predominantly boys aged twelve to fifteen—into producing and transmitting sexual images under threat of exposure. The operation, led by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations, resulted in the seizure of more than 400 devices and the identification of 142 child victims, many of whom had not previously been known to law enforcement, and officials noted that the majority of offenders initiated contact by impersonating peers or romantic interests before escalating to financial or reputational extortion.
Intercepting sextortion before the first image is transmitted removes the leverage that sustains the crime.
