UNICEF Reports 20 Million Children Experienced Technology-Facilitated Sexual Abuse Across 21 Countries

UNICEF reported that nearly one in five internet-using children aged 12 to 17 across 21 countries experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation or abuse within a single year. The data showed that the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recorded 44,155 reports of online enticement including sextortion in 2021, rising to 80,524 in 2022 and 186,819 in 2023, with nearly 100 reports of financial sextortion per day on average in 2024. A September 2025 prosecution in the United States involved at least 68 child victims across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms.
