UK Schools Face New AI Deepfake Guidance as Sextortion Cases Rise 66%

Sextortion targeting UK children increased 66% in 2025, with boys aged 14 to 17 representing 97% of confirmed cases, according to Internet Watch Foundation data. The UK government's Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026 guidance, which took effect September 1, now explicitly defines AI-generated and digitally altered images including deepfakes and deep nudes as nudes and semi-nudes subject to the same legal treatment as real images, eliminating any loophole for AI-generated content and classifying generative AI chatbots that encourage harmful behavior as contact risks within the safeguarding framework.

Sextortion operates through escalation: initial contact, image solicitation, then coercion and threat.
