UK Reports Record Sextortion Cases: 462 Children Blackmailed in First Half of 2026
Guardii Analysis
Record numbers of British under-18s are being extorted by criminals threatening to publish nude imagery, with 462 confirmed reports in the first half of 2026, a 17 percent increase on the total number of reports for all of 2025. According to analysts at the Internet Watch Foundation, much of the imagery used to coerce children has been taken by the young person themselves using a phone or other camera-enabled device, with the IWF's Report Remove service recording 19 sextortion reports in 2022, rising to 164 in 2023, 151 in 2024, and 394 in 2025. In September 2026, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told Parliament the Government will introduce primary legislation to require major tech platforms, including Google and Apple, to build in device-level protections for children to prevent them from sending or receiving nude imagery.
Device-level blocking of image transmission represents a structural intervention that restricts every user's capability in order to address a subset of harmful conduct, raising questions about proportionality, technical feasibility across encrypted platforms, and the displacement of risk to unmonitored channels. The world-leading AI platform developed by Guardii applies a different mechanism: rather than preventing the technical act of image sharing, it detects the coercive context in which a request occurs, identifying sustained pressure, threats, escalation and extortion language within the conversation itself, and intervening to block the hostile contact and surface the targeted child to a parent or authority before the imagery is created or shared. By addressing the pattern of harm rather than the capability to share images, targeted detection protects the vulnerable child without imposing a blanket restriction on every young person's device use.
