UK online safety update: what companies need to know after a busy summer
Guardii Analysis
The UK government confirmed that its under-16 social media ban will come into force from spring 2027, with amendments to the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 expected to be laid before parliament in December and passed before Christmas. Ofcom is conducting a rapid assessment of highly effective age assurance at 16, expected to be published in October, while reminding platforms that existing Online Safety Act obligations including illegal content duties and child safety duties continue to apply.
Blanket age-based account restrictions determine eligibility by birth date rather than exposure to harm. Guardii operates at the point of contact: its anti-grooming and anti-sextortion detection intercepts harmful escalation in direct messages before a child is coerced or blackmailed, whether the perpetrator is 14 or 40, on a permitted platform or an unregulated one. Where a ban displaces harmful contact to messaging apps or gaming platforms outside the scope of enforcement, pattern-based detection follows the conversation, flagging sustained targeting and coercive demand cycles that signal imminent risk and enabling rapid escalation to the appropriate authority when a child is in crisis.
