The UK National Crime Agency has warned of a significant increase in AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery, with offenders using widely available generative AI tools to create realistic depictions of child exploitation. The agency reported that AI-generated CSAM is being distributed through encrypted messaging apps and dark web forums, and that the technology is lowering barriers to entry for offenders while complicating detection efforts. The NCA is urging technology companies to build safeguards into AI systems and is working with international partners to develop detection capabilities for synthetic abuse material.
The operational challenge posed by AI-generated CSAM is not the volume of material in circulation but the speed with which it can be created and distributed through direct-message channels before detection systems respond. Guardii's CSAM detection module, which operates in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox, identifies both photographic and AI-generated child sexual abuse material at the point of transmission, blocking the content before it reaches a child and enabling immediate reporting to the National Crime Agency or other law enforcement. Where generative AI lowers the friction for offenders to produce abuse imagery, detection infrastructure that monitors the direct-message layer where that material is shared provides the operational response that legacy content-moderation pipelines cannot deliver at scale.
