UK National Crime Agency reports 80% rise in online child abuse referrals
Guardii Analysis
The UK National Crime Agency reported on 16 October 2024 that referrals related to online child sexual abuse increased by 80 per cent in the past year, with more than 37,000 reports received in the 12 months to September 2024 compared to approximately 20,500 the previous year. The agency attributed the rise both to increased offending and to improved detection and reporting by technology companies, and highlighted the growing use of encrypted messaging platforms and gaming environments for grooming and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The NCA's figures confirm that online child abuse is migrating to direct-message and encrypted environments where conventional content moderation cannot operate, creating an operational gap between the volume of offending and the capacity to intervene. Real-time pattern recognition that detects grooming escalation, sextortion coercion and CSAM distribution within private conversations offers a scalable response: Guardii identifies harmful interactions as they occur across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, flagging the shape and seriousness of the exchange rather than providing a readable transcript, blocking hostile contact before it reaches the child, and enabling rapid escalation to the right authority in an emergency, addressing the detection challenge the NCA has documented without relying on manual review of tens of thousands of individual reports.
