UK National Crime Agency reports 30% increase in child sexual abuse referrals from US platforms
Guardii Analysis
The UK National Crime Agency's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command published its annual report on 19 September 2024, documenting a 30 percent year-on-year increase in child sexual abuse and exploitation referrals from US-based technology platforms, totaling over 38 million reports globally in 2023. The report attributes the rise to improved proactive detection on major platforms, increased offender activity, and the growing use of generative AI to produce synthetic child sexual abuse material, and warns that end-to-end encryption deployment without equivalent safety measures will significantly reduce visibility of abuse.
The operational gap lies in private messaging, where encryption curtails platform-level scanning but abuse continues to escalate. Startmate-backed Guardii detects grooming, sextortion and CSAM sharing, including AI-generated and deepfake imagery, within encrypted direct-message environments on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox by identifying coercive patterns, image-request escalation and acute distress signals at the user's device, reporting the severity and shape of the conversation to parents, schools or law enforcement without handing anyone a feed of what was said, preserving both privacy and the capacity to surface a child in crisis before the abuse is complete.
