UK National Crime Agency reports 25% increase in child sexual abuse image reports

Guardii Analysis

The UK National Crime Agency reported on 16 October 2024 that the volume of child sexual abuse image referrals from online platforms increased by twenty-five per cent in the year ending September 2024, reaching a record total that the agency attributes both to enhanced detection capabilities and to a surge in synthetic, AI-generated and deepfake material. The data also show a sharp rise in financially motivated sextortion cases, in which offenders coerce children into producing images and then demand payment under threat of distribution, with the majority of victims male and aged between thirteen and seventeen.

A twenty-five per cent annual increase in detected offences underscores the extent to which reactive content moderation lags behind the velocity and variety of offending behaviour, and the emergence of AI-generated abuse imagery as a distinct category highlights the inadequacy of hash-based detection that depends on known-item databases. Guardii's anti-sextortion and anti-CSAM filters are trained to recognise the conversational precursors to image production and financial coercion—threats, repeated demands, urgency cues and negotiation of payment—in real time across messaging platforms, intercepting the solicitation before a child complies and before an image enters circulation, and surfacing the interaction to a parent or to law enforcement while intervention is still possible rather than after the harm is complete.
