UK man sentenced to 20 years for orchestrating sextortion campaigns targeting hundreds of children globally

A 29-year-old man from Bury, Greater Manchester, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment on 2 September 2024 for orchestrating sextortion campaigns that targeted hundreds of children and young adults across the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and other countries. The National Crime Agency investigation found that the offender used Instagram, Snapchat and other platforms to pose as a young female, coerce victims into sharing sexual images, and then threaten to distribute the material unless further images or money were provided, with at least 70 victims identified internationally and evidence of systematic contact escalation and repeated targeting over extended periods.

Sextortion follows a detectable escalation pattern: initial contact, rapport building, the solicitation request, image sharing, the threat and the demand, each stage marked by distinct language and behavioural cues that distinguish coercion from consensual peer conversation.
