A 29-year-old man from Lancashire has been sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment after admitting to a systematic sextortion campaign that targeted more than 400 children in the United Kingdom, United States and other jurisdictions between 2019 and 2023. The National Crime Agency reported on 20 August 2024 that the offender used fake profiles on Snapchat, Instagram and other social media platforms to manipulate victims into sharing intimate images, then threatened to distribute the material unless further images or payments were provided. The case involved coordination with the FBI and other international agencies, and the court heard that several victims suffered severe psychological harm, with at least two attempting suicide.
Every sextortion sequence follows a recognisable arc: the initial approach, the shift to private messaging, the request for images, the threat and the escalation.
