UK man sentenced to 15 years for orchestrating global sextortion network targeting hundreds of children

Guardii Analysis

A 29-year-old man from Aberdeen was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on 11 October 2024 for running a large-scale sextortion operation that targeted hundreds of children globally, creating fake social media profiles on platforms including Snapchat and Instagram to befriend victims aged 11 to 16, coercing them into sharing intimate images, and then demanding further material under threat of exposure. The National Crime Agency investigation, conducted in partnership with international law enforcement, identified at least 286 victims across more than 20 countries, and recovered evidence of the offender cataloguing images and using multiple online identities to evade detection.

This case illustrates the velocity and cross-border reach of sextortion campaigns, and the structural advantage offenders gain when they control the escalation tempo in private messaging channels. Real-time detection of coercion and threat patterns—rather than content review after a victim or platform reports—closes that operational window: Guardii's anti-sextortion module flags the demand, the threat and the escalation as the conversation develops across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms, surfacing a child in crisis to a parent or authority before compliance occurs. For children, that means interception before harm; for investigators, it means earlier notification and stronger evidence chains; and for platforms, it means compliance with a duty of care that post-incident reporting alone cannot satisfy.
