UK government delays Online Safety Act enforcement timeline

Ofcom announced on 12 September 2024 that it is extending the timeline for social media platforms to comply with the Online Safety Act's child-protection provisions, with full enforcement of illegal content duties now expected in early 2025 rather than late 2024. The regulator cited the complexity of implementing age-assurance measures and content moderation systems at scale as the reason for the delay, and confirmed that platforms will have additional months to demonstrate compliance with requirements to prevent children from encountering harmful material.
