UK father jailed for creating AI-generated child abuse images using photos of real children
Guardii Analysis
A man from Bolton, England, was sentenced on 28 October 2024 to 18 years in prison after being convicted of multiple offences including creating AI-generated indecent images of children by manipulating photographs of real victims, some as young as seven. The case, prosecuted under existing UK child abuse imagery laws, is believed to be one of the first custodial sentences in the country specifically involving the use of generative artificial intelligence to produce child sexual abuse material, with the court hearing that the defendant used openly available AI tools to sexualise images of children known to him.
This prosecution demonstrates that generative AI has lowered the technical threshold for producing child sexual abuse material, expanding the threat surface beyond traditional photography or distribution networks. Detection systems capable of identifying AI-generated and manipulated imagery at the point of creation or sharing can prevent such material from being stored, transmitted or used as leverage in sextortion. Guardii's child sexual abuse material detection module is trained on both photographic and synthetic content, flagging deepfakes and AI-manipulated images in real time and enabling immediate intervention by trusted adults or law enforcement before the imagery is weaponised or circulated.
