UK Crown Prosecution Service Secures First Conviction for Creation of AI-Generated Indecent Images of Children

Guardii Analysis

A 37-year-old man from Manchester was sentenced to four years imprisonment on 22 August 2026 following the UK's first prosecution for the creation of AI-generated indecent images of children under Section 1 of the Protection of Children Act 1978, as amended by the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that the defendant used publicly available generative AI tools to produce more than 1,200 synthetic images depicting children in sexual contexts, some of which were then shared via encrypted messaging platforms. The case establishes that UK law treats AI-generated CSAM as equivalent to photographed material for the purposes of prosecution, and that the creation alone—irrespective of distribution—constitutes a criminal offence.

Criminal liability for possession and creation provides a necessary deterrent, but does not prevent the material from being produced, shared and received in the first instance. Guardii's anti-CSAM detection module operates at the transmission layer, scanning direct messages in real time across Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and other platforms to identify and block both photographed and AI-generated child sexual abuse material before it reaches a recipient, whether that recipient is an adult co-offender or a child being groomed or exploited. The system surfaces flagged material for immediate review and escalation to the appropriate authority, enabling law enforcement to intervene at the point of active offending rather than after the fact, and shielding children from exposure to abusive content in their own inboxes.
