Thorn Releases Research on Offender Tactics in Online Child Grooming
Guardii Analysis
Child-safety organisation Thorn published research on 22 August 2024 documenting common tactics used by offenders in online grooming of children, based on analysis of disclosed conversations and survivor accounts. The study identified recurring patterns including rapid relationship-building, isolation from trusted adults, desensitisation to sexual content, and exploitation of a child's developmental vulnerabilities such as desire for validation or fear of consequences, with offenders frequently moving victims from public platforms to private or encrypted messaging channels to avoid detection.
The operational challenge is that grooming follows a behavioural script—escalation, isolation, coercion—that unfolds over multiple messages and across multiple services, a pattern legible to machine learning but invisible to keyword filters or manual review at scale. Backed by Startmate and operating as a Meta Business Partner, Guardii's anti-grooming detection identifies those escalation arcs in real time within direct-message conversations on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, Roblox and other platforms, surfacing high-risk contact to parents and safeguarding professionals before sexual abuse occurs and translating the offender tactics documented in research into the operational signatures that enable early intervention.
