Thorn Releases Report on Emerging Grooming Tactics in Gaming and Metaverse Platforms

Guardii Analysis

A October 2024 report by Thorn documented evolving grooming tactics in gaming and metaverse environments, finding offenders exploit spatial audio, avatar proximity, private virtual spaces, and in-game economies to build trust and isolate child users, often moving victims from game chat to encrypted messaging apps within hours of initial contact. The research identified Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft and VRChat as high-risk environments, and noted that many parents and platform moderation systems remain unaware of the speed and sophistication of grooming in immersive, real-time 3D spaces.

Grooming is a process, not a message, and detection must track the pattern across platform boundaries. Guardii's anti-grooming engine identifies trust-building, isolation, desensitization and escalation as they unfold in direct-message conversations on Roblox, Discord and other platforms where offenders migrate victims after first contact in game environments, surfacing the child at risk to parents or safeguarding professionals while the targeting is underway. The system recognizes conversational tactics rather than relying on keyword filters easily evaded in gaming slang and metaverse contexts, closing the operational gap Thorn's research exposes between the speed of offender tactics and the visibility available to adults responsible for child safety.
