Thorn releases 2026 research report on emerging grooming tactics in gaming voice chat

Guardii Analysis

Child safety technology nonprofit Thorn has published a research report analyzing grooming tactics in gaming voice chat environments, based on interviews with law enforcement, survivors, and analysis of prosecuted cases from 2024 and 2025. The study found that offenders increasingly use voice communication within games like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft to build trust and bypass text-based content moderation, often establishing relationships over weeks or months before requesting private contact or explicit material. Thorn notes that voice chat presents significant technical challenges for automated detection due to the lack of persistent transcripts, ambient game noise, and the real-time nature of the communication.

The research underscores that grooming is a process characterized by identifiable behavioral patterns—progressive isolation, boundary testing, desensitization to sexual topics, and requests to move platforms—that manifest in conversation structure regardless of whether the medium is text or voice. Guardii's anti-grooming detection operates on these structural signals, identifying sustained targeting, escalation sequences, and coercion indicators in direct-message exchanges across the platforms where voice-initiated relationships continue in text. When an offender transitions from voice to written communication to solicit material or arrange contact, Guardii intercepts the tactic at the text stage, surfacing the child to a parent or safeguarding professional and enabling intervention before exploitation occurs.
