Study finds one in five adolescents experience sexual solicitation online

A peer-reviewed study published in Child Abuse and Neglect analysing survey data from over 5,000 adolescents in the United States found that approximately one in five young people aged 12 to 17 reported experiencing online sexual solicitation in the past year, with contact most frequently occurring on social media platforms and messaging apps. The research identified that solicitation often began with seemingly benign conversation that escalated to requests for sexual images or in-person meetings, and that many victims did not recognise the interaction as harmful until the exchange had progressed, underscoring the gap between point-of-contact risk and delayed user reporting or parental awareness.
