The Stanford Internet Observatory published research on September 8, 2026, documenting a 400 percent year-over-year increase in reports of AI-generated and deepfake child sexual abuse material across major social media and file-sharing platforms in the first eight months of 2026. The report, based on data from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and voluntary disclosures by Meta, Google, Discord and Snap Inc., found that synthetic imagery now accounts for approximately 18 percent of total CSAM reports, up from 4 percent in 2025, and that generative-AI tools—both commercial services with inadequate safeguards and open-source diffusion models—are being weaponized to create non-consensual sexualized depictions of real children by manipulating photographs harvested from social media profiles and school websites. The Observatory warned that existing hash-matching systems used by platforms cannot detect novel synthetic material and called for urgent deployment of classifier-based detection technologies.
