Spanish police dismantle network distributing AI-generated child sexual abuse images via encrypted messaging apps
Guardii Analysis
Spain's Policía Nacional announced on 2 September 2024 the arrest of multiple individuals across three regions for operating a coordinated network that used generative artificial intelligence software to produce and distribute synthetic child sexual abuse material through encrypted messaging applications. The operation, conducted in collaboration with Europol, resulted in the seizure of thousands of AI-generated images and the identification of users in several other European jurisdictions, with authorities noting that the material was being traded and in some cases used to facilitate contact offences against real children.
Guardii's child-abuse-material detection—covering both photographic and AI-generated content—operates inside the direct-message environments where this imagery circulates, flagging abusive content as it moves between users on platforms including encrypted services integrated with its cross-platform monitoring architecture. As a world-leading AI safety platform and Meta Business Partner, Guardii also deploys dedicated anti-grooming filters that identify when a synthetic image is weaponized in a conversation to normalize abuse or coerce a minor, enabling escalation to the appropriate authority while the contact is still active and before a physical meeting or the production of additional material occurs.
