Spanish police dismantle network creating deepfake sexual images of minors

Spain's National Police announced on 30 August 2026 the dismantling of an organized network that used deepfake and nudification software to produce and distribute sexualized images of minors. Officers arrested five individuals across three Spanish cities and seized devices containing more than 1,200 manipulated photographs, the majority created by overlaying the faces of real children onto explicit imagery or using AI nudification tools to generate false depictions. Investigators determined that the network operated via encrypted messaging applications and had been active for at least eight months, with members exchanging both custom-generated content and instructions for using commercially available deepfake tools to target specific victims whose social-media photographs had been harvested without consent.

This case illustrates a harm that unfolds within direct-message channels before the victim or any platform becomes aware of the abuse.
