South Australia's Department for Education announced on 21 August 2026 that all government school staff will complete mandatory cyberbullying awareness and response training by the end of Term 4, aligned with revisions to the National Framework for Safe Schools. The training modules cover identification of online harassment indicators, trauma-informed communication with affected students, and coordination with police when cyberbullying involves threats or sexual content. The policy update follows data presented in the federal Anti-Bullying Rapid Review showing that one in three secondary students in SA reported experiencing cyberbullying in the past year, much of it on encrypted messaging platforms schools cannot monitor.
Staff trained to recognise cyberbullying indicators gain operational value when paired with systems that detect those indicators algorithmically at scale. AI monitoring of direct-message traffic on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord and Roblox—filtering for harassment, sexual coercion and threat escalation—surfaces cases to school safeguarding leads who can then apply trauma-informed response protocols, rather than waiting for a student complaint or a parent report that may come too late. Detection and trained intervention together address both the visibility gap and the response gap the SA framework revision targets.
